Bold vs. Neutral

Feb 26, 2020 | Design Knowledge

Oh the contrastversy between bold and neutral colors in home design. The classic struggle for homeowners going through a remodel is choosing color or no color. Expressing oneself, in their own home, with their favorite colors is important for some. They do this by paint color, cabinetry, plumbing, etc. Though, others may want to keep their remodel more simplistic with neutral tones for resale purposes. It’s hard to say what the right choice for a remodel truly is…

Here are some pros and cons for both options. That way it’s easier to decide what is best for your home remodel. So, lets see what they are…

Bold Pro’s

  • Express your personality & style by color
  • Great for small spaces
  • Makes a space feel & look fancier/dramatic
  • Don’t need as much decor
  • Emotionally can make you feel happier or energized

Bold Con’s

  • May eventually have buyer’s remorse
  • Sometimes not great for resale
  • Not what interior designers consider timeless
  • May be overwhelming & drown out design details

Neutral Pro’s

  • A classic look
  • Creates a calming atmosphere
  • Never goes out of style
  • Works with any style choice (modern, rustic, traditional, etc.)
  • Makes spaces feel bigger & cleaner
  • Able to use multiple patterns & textures
  • Brings decor & details to life

Neutral Con’s

  • Dirt, stains, dents & nicks are more noticeable
  • Overtime may become boring
  • Neutral tones don’t give back emotionally
  • Gray is associated with anxiety & depression
  • Gives an impression of a gloomy & cold environment

Even after listing all the “pro’s and con’s” for bold and neutral colors, it’s still hard to pick a clear, cut winner. It would be like trying to figure out what personality type is better, an introvert or extrovert. Obviously this question can’t be answered because both personality types have amazing strengths and quite a few weaknesses. Which is exactly why both bold and neutral color tones have their place in any home remodel. It might just depend on your personality type! 😉
