Looking to brighten up a room? Wanting to add some color to your kitchen? Feeling like your bathroom needs some detail or depth? Have you ever thought about using tile?!? There is only one product in the interior design world, besides maybe wallpaper, that offers more variety of colors, patterns, sizes, shapes, textures, and so on than tile. Not to mention, tile has the capability to bring pizzazz from head to toe in any home. Let’s take a closer look, because it may just spark your next remodel or DIY project.

Popular Ways To Use Tile

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of tile for your home? A brand new backsplash, flooring, or shower would be my guess. Those are the three most popular ways interior designers incorporate tile when designing a remodel or new build. Here is why…

~Backsplashes ~

The perfect kitchen remodel includes a backsplash. Another great way to modernize an older kitchen, without fully remodeling it, is with a backsplash. Not only does tile add style, but it’s also easier to clean and does not stain when there are splatters, spills, or other messes in the kitchen.

Our Favorite Options: Subway, mosaic, mirrored, metallic, and any form of colorful tiles

Types: Ceramic, Glass, Natural Stone, or Porcelain

Trends: Tile from countertops to ceiling, gold accents, large subway tile, tile patterns – chevron, herringbone, fish scale, laser cut, and graphic prints

~Flooring ~

Tile flooring can be used throughout your entire home. Though tile floors are not the cheapest option, they do however have some amazing benefits. These benefits include: easy to clean, extremely durable, water resistant, large variety, great resale value, and eco-friendly. Side note..the biggest complaint about tile floors is they are cold, but don’t forget, they can be heated. Due to all these benefits, we highly recommend installing tile floors in your bathrooms, kitchen, laundry room, mudroom, entry ways, etc.

Our Favorite Options: Brick or wood looking tile

Type: Ceramic or Natural Stone

Trends: Wood visuals, black & white vintage/retro stenciled, mosaics, and marble tiles

~Tiled Showers ~

Anyone and everyone wants a walk-in tiled shower. It’s not hard to imagine why. A tile shower is a “must-have” item when remodeling a master bathroom, because it adds value to your home and so much more. Tile doesn’t have to be just limited to the shower in your bathroom design. Actually tile from head to toe in bathroom designs have become exceedingly popular over the past few years.

Our Favorite Options: White subway (with either white or black grout) and everything marble

Types: Glazed Ceramic, Natural Stone, or Porcelain

Trends: Wood, geometric or linear shaped, and mosaic or penny round tile on showers floor, niche, or accent strip

Some Of Our Favorite Ways To Use Tile

We hate the thought that individuals may think that tile is limited to only backsplashes, flooring, or shower designs. When actually tile can be used for so much more in your home! Here are three ways we love to integrate tile in our designs.

~Ceilings ~

You might be thinking “WHAT, are you crazy?” That might be debatable, but tiling a shower or bathroom ceilings is not, it’s a smart idea. Not only are they stylish, but it helps protect your design from moisture damage.

Our Favorite Options/Trends: Using tile you already picked for your shower/bathroom walls or a neutral color mosaic tile

Types: Glazed Ceramic, Natural Stone, or Porcelain

~Fireplace ~

A great way to utilize tile is around your fireplace. There are all sorts of tiles that fit with any design style. That way designers can create the perfect contemporary, farmhouse, rustic, etc. fireplace for their clients. Tiled fireplaces will add a focal point to your family room, especially if brought all the way to the ceiling.

Our Favorite Options: Geometric, marble, and slate tiles

Types: Ceramic, Glass, Natural Stone, or Porcelain

Trends: Architectural, glass mosaic, marble, sculptural, slate, or textured tiles

~Walls ~

Tile is beautiful, so why not spread the beauty throughout the entire house. Accent walls in bedrooms, family rooms, laundry rooms, etc. have become desired in interior design. You can say goodbye to fingerprints and smudges on walls, because tile is more durable and easier to clean than paint or wallpaper.

Our Favorite Options/Trends: Brick, geometric, patterned, or wood visual tiles

Types: Ceramic or Porcelain

Other Creative Ways To Use Tile

Here are a few other fun ways to express your style using tile. Tiled mirrors are a fun way to add more detail to your bathroom design or tie in an accent tile from your shower or elsewhere. Also, a tiled table top could become a family heirloom that could be passed down through the generations. These two options should be creative, so have fun with it!
